The iTriage health website contains a mine of information for checking those worrying symptoms you’ve been having. Access a database of all US hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and emergency care facilities as well as information on over 750,000 physicians. This makes it an indispensable tool when you’re not sure if you or your child require medical attention but what about things that crop up when you can’t get to a computer?

Luckily, iTriage is now available on iPhone and Android and will soon be released for Blackberry.  Search the symptoms against the possible causes to ascertain what kind of medical facility you should attend. Do you need the Emergency Room or just a physician? Are your symptoms minor and possibly treatable by a pharmacist? Even if you’re away from home, iTriage can pinpoint your location and provide full directions to the nearest hospital, urgent care, pharmacist or physician using your phone’s GPS technology. It can even tell you what the waiting times are for a number of large hospitals.

iTriage is free to download and use and is certainly a useful application to keep close to hand. However, we would stress that if you think the situation is an emergency, it should be dealt with accordingly as quickly as possible.

Medical Apps Cheat Sheet For Smartphones

by Susan July 30, 2010 at 8:39 am

Keeping bang up to date with every procedure you could be called upon to perform is not easy, however thanks to a new app from Elsevier you can now read about procedures and see videos from surgery to ensure you are suitably reminded before you go into the operating theatre.

Called the Procedures Consult Mobile – which isn’t the most user friendly name we have ever heard, the app can be downloaded in iPhone and Android form.  This app will be an excellent tool for students and experienced health care professionals alike, and features fantastically clear diagrams and images which explain each of the 300 procedures offered by the app.  The beauty of course is the fact that this is on your phone which means you can access it wherever you happen to be, even if you do not have time to get to a computer to access information over the internet.

Procedures are grouped into categories for ease of searching, and these are sold as modular downloads, costing about $40 each, so not the cheapest but certainly money well spent. The full product comes it at $280 as there are 7 modules. As a bonus there is a specific category and module for the medical student which will be a real boon for those training.  It could be the perfect tool for the teaching hospital, will definitely be on the wish lists of the impoverished students and, we imagine, popular with experienced surgeons alike.
