  • Just5 – Just A Phone

by Susan July 15, 2010 at 8:03 am

Normally we are keeping our eyes peeled for the latest groundbreaking technologies and keenly reporting them to you.  Medicine is such a forward thinking developing area, we are constantly moving forwards in our efforts to promote and preserve life so it seems strange to sing the praises of technology which is actually basic and rather old hat.  However, Just5 have seen a niche in the market and have created a mobile phone that brings simply the ability to make calls.

These basic ‘bare’ phones are very specifically designed to be useful, and even potentially life saving to those with some physical impairment that means the world of modern technology bypasses them. This can render them excluded from society and in turn possibly unable to contact the appropriate people when help is needed, which is why the medical professionals need to be aware of this phone.

Visually impaired, elderly and many other groups can benefit from Just5, it features big easy to see buttons, a louder ring and speech volume and a longer lasting battery than other more complex units on the market.  The potentially life saving feature is the emergency SOS button, which when activated will immediately start dialing and texting up to 5 predefined numbers until one of them answers, plus the phone switches to loud speaker mode, excellent if the owner had fallen and cannot get up for example.

The company has made a huge effort to keep these handsets desirable and aesthetically pleasing as well as simple and easy to use.  Perfect for a child to understand, should a parent be suffering a serious illness and potentially need medical attention at any stage.  We can see a wide range of people that could benefit from this technology, and medical practitioners will doubtless find potential users daily.

Mobile Microscope To Revolutionize Medicine In Developing Countries

by Susan July 8, 2010 at 8:53 am

We are increasingly discovering that there really isn’t much we can’t harness a mobile phone to do. With the correct software and attachments it is proving to be a seriously useful tool in the medical world.  The latest incarnation sees our versatile mobile becoming a microscope, and looks set to revolutionize the way underdeveloped countries can practice medicine.

Currently a prototype, it utilizes a cleverly shrunken microscope lens, which attaches to the phone and turns it into a potentially lifesaving tool.  Samples of blood or salvia can be loaded onto the slides, in this case single use chips, which are in turn inserted into the side of the lens.  Images can then be captured by the phone, allowing them to be sent instantly to a location with a larger medical facility for specialist analysis.

On the spot, the clever software is able to provide a red blood cell count, a white blood cell count and identification for microparticles, which could well give the physician on site enough information to begin treatment whilst waiting for the more in depth results to be sent back.  Research scientists at Ozcan, responsible for the technology, are also quick to point out other uses, such as instant testing of water quality in the wake of a natural disaster such as an earthquake or hurricane.

Tests are being concentrated in Africa during this summer, partly funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.  One of the key points here though is the cheap cost of the lens and software, making this a very real possibility for these areas to fund themselves, or for aid workers to take out with them.  With nearly all mobiles having camera technology, this is sure to revolutionize what testing can be done locally in these remote and underdeveloped areas.
